Scalp Micropigmentation makes a great deal of difference to the lives of individuals suffering from hair loss. If you are planning to undergo the SMP procedure, it is perfectly understandable that you might be battling anxiety, questions, and concerns. This blog aims to keep you well-informed about the SMP process.
From initial consultation to actual procedure, the SMP process, when done right, can give you instant results from the first session.
When it comes to SMP, ‘SMP procedure’ and ‘SMP process’ are used interchangeably by many. There is a slight difference. Let’s just say, ‘The SMP process’ is a holistic approach that encompasses meticulous planning and the actual Scalp Micropigmentation procedure in its core.
The Scalp Micropigmentation Process
Now let’s delve into the intricacies of the SMP Process which sets the stage for your desired results. When you choose a specialist who has the right mix of experience and expertise, your hair loss redressal goals will be achieved with seamless precision.
Let us explain how the SMP process pans out.
Initial consultation
Initial consultation is quite an important step that kick starts the actual process of SMP. The specialist will check your scalp and study the hair loss pattern. Based on his assessment, he will explain the procedure for your level of hair loss and the post treatment scalp care plan. You will also be invited to ask your queries and share your concerns. This one step will help you decide if the specialist is the one for you!
During this stage, the expert will also give you instructions on conditioning and preparing your scalp for the procedure. Only a smooth scalp without scabs, dry skin or sun damaged skin will make it easier for an expert to work his magic.
Patch Test In Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)
A patch test is usually conducted after the consultation phase, prior to the full SMP treatment. It involves applying a small amount of SMP pigment to a discreet area on the scalp using the same method as the actual procedure. The test area will be barely visible and noticeable only to the SMP artist, allowing the client to return to daily activities without revealing any signs of an upcoming hair loss treatment.
The primary purpose of the patch test is to check for allergic reactions to the organic pigments or other materials used in SMP. While not all SMP providers perform this test, reputable SMP clinics conduct it to provide an extra layer of safety for their clients. Since some individuals may have allergies to natural ingredients—such as those found in certain foods (e.g., seafood, fruits, vegetables, and meats)—this step helps mitigate any potential risks
After the test, the practitioner will wait at least 48 hours to monitor for any signs of redness, swelling, itching, or irritation before proceeding with the full treatment.
The Scalp Micropigmentation Procedure
The SMP procedure starts two days after the patch test, beginning with the first session of treatment.
1. First Session
Mapping-Out
This crucial step will give you a clear picture of how your scalp would look post-treatment. You are requested to come in with a smooth-shaven scalp for your first session. If needed, your specialist will shave your scalp to mark the treatment areas. If you don’t have a defined hairline, the expert will map out the desired hairline on your scalp, including the front, back, and sides. You will be invited to share your opinion or request changes to the marked hairline. This customised approach ensures the SMP results are to your satisfaction.
Pigment Preparation
During this stage, the SMP practitioner will prepare the pigment based on the color of your hair follicles and skin tone. The hypoallergenic pigments are safe for the skin.
Using specially designed micro-needles, the expert will begin adding pigment dots to your scalp. Initially, the pigment density will be kept low to medium in the treatment area. The SMP practitioner will closely monitor how your skin responds to the pigment during the settling period.
If any pigment retention issues arise in future sessions, the practitioner will evaluate the cause and make the necessary adjustments. This could involve modifying the application technique—such as changing needle size, adjusting hang time, or pressure—and fine-tuning the pigment formulation. These adjustments ensure optimal results for the remaining sessions.
2. Second Session – Building Layer Density
Once you get in for the second session, the specialist will evaluate the results of the first session. He will observe the treated area and adjust the pigment concentration for the second session. In the second session, the specialist focuses on building up density with pigments that may be one or 2 tones darker than the pigment used during the initial session. After the second session, ample time is given to let the pigments settle in seamlessly.
3. Third Session
After leaving 30-35 days for the results of the second session to settle in, the specialist will schedule your third session. After thorough analysis of the results so far, he will carefully plan the density, pigment concentration, and blending process for the third session. A good specialist will keep tweaking the procedure (if need-be) till the desired results are achieved.
4. The optional Fourth-session
Some individuals with unconditioned scalp or pigment retention issues will require an additional session. Here the specialist will aim to equalise the entire treatment plan, ensuring the end results are as natural looking as possible and on desired lines.
